People with Polycythaemia Vera (PV) produce more red blood cells than normal. This condition is sometimes called an absolute erythrocytosis, which simply means an excess amount of red blood cells.

PV is a rare condition affecting mostly those who are middle-aged or elderly.

Some people with PV experience only mild symptoms, while others have more complications. For patients at risk of complications, there are a number of effective treatment options to reduce red blood cell levels.

Recent research shows that nearly all PV patients have a mutation in a protein called JAK2 - a protein that regulates blood cell production. This mutation may result from viral infections or radiation damage, but more research needs to be done to determine the causes of PV.
