Haematologists making a diagnosis of myelofibrosis (MF) will check to see if you have an enlarged spleen and a low total blood count (pancytopenia). In the early phase of the disease, the bone marrow is sometimes overactive and makes too many blood cells. This phase occurs before the fibrous scarring begins to become very prominent and damages the bone marrow. The haematologist will take a note of the symptoms, then look for features of myelofibrosis and carry out the following tests to confirm the diagnosis:
